The Passion for Things
The Passion for Things
Buenaventura Wednesday 02 April 2003

NO work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. I wonder who have come up with the slogan. As far as I remember, the Dilbert editions I have carefully sorted out in the bookstore do not bear the same slogans. It was due to the publisher's lack of love for nursery rhymes. Or maybe, he was thinking of de Caprio's character in the hit movie, Titanic.

I had this another eyeball last summer in Blue Magic Ayala. This time with a constant IRC pal I have met in the late 2000. She was hoping to see me in person before she'll leave for the States. And so we set the date to meet each other. Then, there she was. Holding a bulk of white papers, she managed a smile. After exchanging our hellos, we moved to Ayala cinema to look a bench. For two hours, we were discussing poetry and literature. The coversation was great, from Shakespeare's classics to the ultra modern free verses of poetry. Phooey. I can skip my Literature 2 class that I'll be taking on my 4th year.

Reading a lot every verses she made, I carefully tried to fathom every bit of literature she poured on the paper. Magnifico. The verses moved. This is total literature immersion from a modern poet. Lines has set a tone that sends message on life, love, sex and emotions.

" Where did you get the inspiration?," I asked.

" Ah, you mean the spark to write? They say the spark is a donne, a gift but when you have the passion to write, you don't need to have spark."

What she said was for real. When you love what you're doing, everything follows. I recall that when I was a little kid, I was often asked to recite my ambition. I told them that I really want to become a pilot because I love to fly. They were delighted. Years later, I decided not to pursue the dream because I was not having a perfect vision. So, I changed what I have written in slambooks under ambitions. I placed the word "lawyer". Until last year, I carried the dream that someday I would soon become a brilliant litigator, inspired by the Impeachment trial and the courtroom sitcoms. Then, I realized the need for me to start ahead in life. Attending Law School might get me back to square one after passing the Bar Exams. When someone will hand me a slambook now, I shall place the word, "writer."

Yes, I love to write. Just as I love reading books. Just like I love seeing the sun rise although I usually wake up late in the morning during summer breaks. Just like I love listening to Acoustics. Just like I love going online in IRC. Just like I love bugging Nestor with the phrase, "Chinese girlfriend from HongKong." Just like I love eating when everything has gone bad. Just like I love talking to Rana to convince her that I am only in love with Jamille's sultry legs. Just like I love living.

Someone in his late 50's told me that in life you don't do what is fun and easy but rather what is hard and necessary. On a practical sense, this was undoubtedly a sound advice. Mind you, I am convinced. However, doing what is hard and necessary can sometimes lead you to nowhere. Financial experts will disagree with me. Pardon me this time. Look, when you do things for sake of hefty bucks, the essence of the work diminished. What is necessary is that we're having fun not we're having hard time enjoying it. The work may give you the prestige and honor until such a time you'll just quit with the reason that you're already fed up with it.

If you enjoy a thing, enjoy it. If you don't like a thing, change it. If you don't like a thing and can't change it, don't do it. If you don't like a thing, can't change it and have to do it, begin to love it. These are the rules to simply enjoying life.

Fun and easy. Hard and Necessary. Can the two phrases go hand in hand? Why not? When you choose what is hard and necessary, you'll have to learn to enjoy it. Right. Sometimes, in life there are really things that we despise most. You soon find out that these things are unavoidable. The only thing that you can do is to change yourself. Love things. Have the passion in things. Love the dirtiest work. Love your tools. Love your paper and pencil. Love your books. Love your teachers. Love life. Soon, when you start to do things with a smile and with passion, they'll all give you back the love. That's what you call returning the favor.

Start having the passion for everything. Usually, success comes with loving what you're doing. Do what you love most and the rewards are great. After all, All work while playing will not make Jack a dull boy.
