The Glory That Was PBA
The Glory That Was PBA
Buenaventura Saturday 29 March 2003

I AM a hardcore PBA fan until now. I can still remember my early grade school days. Those were the times when I never failed to watch and turn on the television every Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. With a pen and a recorder in hand, picking up superb plays during late nights welcomed scolding from my aunt. Excuses were a lot. I have to convince her that I have finished the homeworks and reviewed my lesson.

The early 1990's were the height of the Purefoods-San Miguel rivalry. So do the bets in beer houses. Screams were defeaning as they covered the barks of the dogs in the late evenings. The intensity level of everyone, up on their feet was unmatched. Better than Holyfield and Bowe World Boxing Council's main event.Cheers from both parties were apparent and the crowd gets involved in the game. Friendships were lost with each group flaunting their boos and cheers. Every one else was emotional when it comes to the last dying seconds. The victor beams while the loser weeps.

This went on for more years. The league produced top notch players competitive for international basketball scene. We bagged the Jones Cup, the SEA Games and the 2nd or 3rd finishes in the Asian Games. We were a proud basketball team. We once showed to the world that Filipinos were not far behind when it comes to battling down the giants of Sports.

Until lately, veteran basketball players entered the showbusiness industry and politics. They became clowns in the limelight. Gone was Benjie Paras' dominance in the paint. Say hello to Benjie Paras, the jester. Gone was Bonel Balingit's potent force in the basket. Say hello to Bonel Balingit, the torpid comedian. Gone was the Big J's secret elbows and fists. Say hello to the tough to crack legislator. Gone were the days of aerial manuevers and raw entertainment.

Then, the controversies followed. Drug tests have to be taken. The hype of Asi Taulava's intrigues alarmed the whole community, as they took measures to vindicate the names of each players involved in the issue. Really, drugs and basketball don't mix. Another controversy followed. The legality of the Fil-Am players citizenship is under way in the Senate Inquiry. Falsification of birth documents and places of birth angered the legislators. So do the fans who clamor for quality players amidst the declining number of quality games.

I now rarely hear talks of the towns about last night's PBA games. They are more concerned with how the defending World Champions LA Lakers would perform in the 2003 NBA Playoffs. Recently, I had a little chitchat with a friend about basketball. Alas, we were no longer talking of Dondon Hontiveros 4th quarter heroics against Shell nor the unearthly moves of Vergel Meneses. He was so consumed with his predictions that Sacramento Kings is a team to be in the Playoffs. Perhaps, he was just captured by Hedu Torkoglu's name.

The Metropolitan Basketball Association was gone for eternity. The up and coming National Basketball League could be a failure. Skeptics were quick to say that. Will the first league of Asia follow this trend? Could it that be a league founded for more than three decades of hardwork and dedication would be gone in a wink of an eye?

Unless rookies will takeover the empty shoes left by our PBA legends, I shall remain part of the glory days of the league. Yes, the rest of the fans will agree with me.

[ Author's Note : Do you think Noli Eala, the new commissioner can do the job in restoring the shining memories of the league? Hopefully, yes. I wonder why Rudy Hatfield has been questioned with regards to his bloodline. As far as I know, Rudy is a distant relative of mine (my grandpa in the father's line and his grandma in the mother's line are 2nd degree cousins) What's this Senate Inquiry for?
